How to perform Tawaf: Step-by-step complete guide for Bangladeshi pilgrims
Standing before the Holy Kaaba for the first time is not easy to describe. A Muslim walks around
the Holy Kaaba seven times with love, humility, and remembrance of Allah. It looks simple from
the outside. Tawaf is one of the most beautiful acts of Ibadah in Hajj and
Umrah.
Many Bangladeshi pilgrims arrive with deep emotion, but also with simple, practical questions.
Where do I start Tawaf? How do I count the seven rounds? What dua should I read? What
should I do after finishing?
The steps are not difficult, but knowing them before you travel makes the Ibadah calmer and more
meaningful. We explain how to perform Tawaf correctly, from the starting point near Hajar
al-Aswad to the two rak‘ahs after Tawaf.
This guide is written for Bangladeshi pilgrims in clear, simple words. It follows Quran and
Hadith references, so you can learn the steps of Tawaf and understand the Ibadah behind it.
Tawaf means circling the Kaaba as an act of Ibadah. It is performed in Masjid al-Haram in
Makkah. During Tawaf, pilgrims move around the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction,
keeping the Kaaba on the left side.
Tawaf is not just walking. It is obedience. It is remembrance. It is a moment when the heart
turns to Allah while the body moves around the House of Allah.
Key benefits of Tawaf
Tawaf brings many spiritual benefits when it is done with sincerity and proper
understanding. Most importantly, Tawaf helps a pilgrim return to Allah with a softer heart. It
is a moment of repentance, patience, gratitude, and hope.
Tawaf brings the heart closer to Allah
It gives a special time for dua
It helps a pilgrim seek forgiveness
It strengthens unity among the Muslim Ummah
It follows the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
It teaches patience, discipline, and good manners
It helps a pilgrim reset the heart spiritually
During Tawaf, a pilgrim remembers that life should revolve around Ibadah, not pride, desire, or
worldly distraction. It is also a powerful time to ask Allah for mercy, guidance, family
wellbeing, halal rizq, and success in the Hereafter.
“قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ سَبْعًا،
وَصَلَّى خَلْفَ
الْمَقَامِ
رَكْعَتَيْنِ ” Transliteration: Qadima an-Nabiyyu sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam
fa-taafa
bil-bayti sab‘an, wa salla khalf al-maqaami rak‘atayn. Meaning: “The Prophet
(SAW) came and
performed seven rounds of Tawaf around the House, then prayed two rak‘ahs behind Maqam
Ibrahim.”
Tawaf carries great reward too. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“مَنْ طَافَ بِهَذَا الْبَيْتِ أُسْبُوعًا فَأَحْصَاهُ كَانَ كَعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ” Transliteration: Man taafa bihadhal-bayti usboo‘an fa-ahsaahu kaana ka ‘itqi
raqabah.
Meaning: “Whoever performs Tawaf around this House seven times and keeps count of
it,
it is as if he freed a slave.” Reference: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 959
Why is Tawaf important in Hajj and Umrah?
Tawaf is a main part of Umrah. Without it, Umrah is not complete. In Hajj,
pilgrims
perform different types of Tawaf at different times, such as Tawaf al-Qudum, Tawaf al-Ifadah,
and
Tawaf al-Wada.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed Tawaf and showed the Ummah how to do it. So a pilgrim should
follow
the Sunnah with care, calmness, and respect for others. No pushing. No hardship. Worship should
bring humility, not harm.
he Prophet (SAW) taught Muslims to follow his way when performing the rites of Hajj.
“لِتَأْخُذُوا مَنَاسِكَكُمْ فَإِنِّي لَا أَدْرِي لَعَلِّي لَا أَحُجُّ بَعْدَ حَجَّتِي هَذِهِ”
Transliteration: Li-ta’khudhoo manaasikakum, fa-inni laa adri la‘alli laa ahujju ba‘da
hajjati
haadhihi. Meaning: “Learn your rituals from me, for I do not know whether I will perform Hajj
after
this Hajj of mine.”
Reference: Sahih Muslim 1297
Before Tawaf: What should you prepare?
Before starting Tawaf, prepare yourself calmly. Rushing creates confusion. Tawaf is Ibadah, so
begin with a clean mind and sincere intention.
01
Make your intention
The place of intention is the heart. You do not need to shout it. Know which Tawaf you are
performing, such as Tawaf for Umrah, Tawaf al-Ifadah, Tawaf al-Wada, or voluntary Tawaf.
“إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ” Transliteration: Innamal-a‘maalu
bin-niyyah. Meaning: “Actions are judged according to intentions.” Reference: Sahih
al-Bukhari
6689
02
Be in a state of purity
A pilgrim should perform Tawaf with wudu. Wear clean clothes and maintain personal cleanliness.
Avoid anything that may disturb other worshippers, such as strong smells, pushing, shouting, or
blocking the pathway.
Women in menstruation or postnatal bleeding should wait until they become
pure before performing Tawaf.
“فَافْعَلِي مَا يَفْعَلُ الْحَاجُّ، غَيْرَ أَنْ لاَ تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَطْهُرِي”
Transliteration: Faf‘ali maa yaf‘alul-haajju, ghayra an laa tatoofi bil-bayti
hatta
tathuri.
Meaning: “Do what the pilgrim does, except do not perform Tawaf around the House
until you become pure.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Menstruation
03
Wear Ihram if Tawaf is for Umrah
For Umrah, men must be in Ihram before entering Makkah from the Miqat. Women also enter the
state of Ihram, but they wear normal modest clothing, not the two white sheets worn by men. For
voluntary Tawaf, a person does not need Ihram.
Spiritual purpose of Tawaf around the Kaaba
Tawaf is an act of Ibadah, not just walking around the Kaaba. A Muslim performs it to show
love, obedience, and humility before Allah. The body moves around the House of Allah, while the
heart turns back to its Creator.
Allah says:
“وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ”
Meaning: “And let them perform Tawaf around the Ancient House.”
Reference: Surah Al-Hajj, 22:29
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also performed Tawaf and taught the Ummah how to do it. So every round
reminds a believer to follow Allah’s command and the Sunnah of His Messenger (SAW).
Main purposes of Tawaf include:
Showing obedience to Allah
Following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Remembering that life should revolve around Allah
Making sincere dua and seeking forgiveness
Feeling unity with Muslims from around the world
Renewing the heart with humility and sincerity
Tawaf also teaches unity. Muslims from every country, language, and background walk in the same
direction around the Kaaba. No one is higher. No one is separate. All stand as servants of
Allah.
Step-by-step guide: How to perform Tawaf
Tawaf becomes easier when you understand the steps before reaching the Kaaba. A pilgrim begins
from the Hajar al-Aswad line, keeps the Kaaba on the left side, and completes seven rounds with
calmness, dua, and remembrance of Allah.
After Tawaf, two rak‘ahs are prayed, Zamzam is taken, and if it is Umrah, the pilgrim continues
to Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah.
Step 1: Enter Masjid al-Haram with humility
Enter Masjid al-Haram calmly. Keep your eyes, tongue, and heart under control. Seeing the Kaaba
for the first time can be emotional. Make dua. Thank Allah for bringing you there. Avoid taking
photos during active Ibadah if it distracts you or blocks others. This is a sacred moment.
Protect it.
Step 2: Go toward the starting point of Tawaf
Tawaf starts from the line of Hajar al-Aswad, the Black Stone corner. Today, the starting area is
usually marked by signs or the green light on the upper structure of Masjid al-Haram. Stand in
line with Hajar al-Aswad. This is where each round begins and ends.
Step 3: Face or gesture toward Hajar al-Aswad
If you can safely kiss or touch Hajar al-Aswad without pushing anyone, it is Sunnah. But during
Hajj and busy Umrah seasons, this is usually very difficult. Do not push. Do not hurt anyone. Do
not fight for it. If you cannot reach it, simply face or gesture toward it with your right hand
and say:
“بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ” Transliteration: Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.
Meaning: “In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.”
Then start walking.
“إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لاَ تَضُرُّ وَلاَ تَنْفَعُ” Transliteration: Inni a‘lamu annaka hajarun laa tadurru wa laa tanfa‘u. Meaning: “I know that you are only a stone. You do not harm or benefit.” Reference: Statement of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), Sahih al-Bukhari 1597
This teaches an important point. Muslims do not Ibadah the Black Stone. They follow the
Sunnah
of the Prophet (SAW).
Step 4: Keep the Kaaba on your left side
Start walking anti-clockwise around the Kaaba. Keep the Kaaba on your left. Walk naturally. Do
not stop suddenly. Do not walk against the flow. A full round begins at Hajar al-Aswad and ends
when you return to the same point.
Step 5: Complete seven rounds
Tawaf has seven rounds. Count carefully. One common mistake is counting the walk from the mosque
entrance as the first round. That is not correct. Tawaf begins only from the Hajar al-Aswad
line. You may count using your fingers, a counter, prayer beads, or a phone counter if it does
not distract you. Keep it simple.
Step 6: Men may do ramal in the first three rounds
For men, it is Sunnah to walk briskly with short steps in the first three rounds of certain
Tawaf, especially Tawaf of arrival or Tawaf for Umrah, if space allows. This is called ramal.
The remaining four rounds are walked normally.
Do not do ramal if the area is too crowded. Safety comes first. The Sunnah should not be used as
a reason to push or disturb others.
“رَمَلَ ثَلَاثًا وَمَشَى أَرْبَعًا ” Transliteration: Ramala thalaathan wa mashaa arba‘an. Meaning: “He walked briskly in three rounds and walked normally in four rounds.” Reference: Sahih Muslim 1218a
Step 7: Make dua, dhikr, and recite Quran during Tawaf
There is no single fixed dua for every round of Tawaf. You may make dua in Arabic, Bangla,
English, or any language you understand. Ask Allah for forgiveness, guidance, halal rizq, good
health, protection for family, and acceptance of Hajj or Umrah. You may say:
SubhanAllah
Alhamdulillah
Allahu Akbar
La ilaha illa Allah
Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad
You may also recite Quran quietly. Between Rukn Yamani and Hajar al-Aswad, many pilgrims recite
this Quranic dua:
“رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ” Transliteration: Rabbana aatina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-aakhirati hasanah, wa
qina
‘adhaaban-naar. Meaning: “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect
us
from
the punishment of the Fire.” Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:201
Step 8: Pass around Hijr Ismail correctly
Hijr Ismail is the semi-circular area beside the Kaaba. During Tawaf, you must walk outside Hijr
Ismail, not through it. Passing through Hijr Ismail does not complete that part of the round
properly. Stay with the Tawaf path. Do not cut through the inner area.
Step 9: Complete the seventh round at Hajar al-Aswad
After finishing the seventh round, return to the Hajar al-Aswad line. Gesture again if possible
and say, Allahu Akbar. Your Tawaf is now complete. Do not add an eighth round by mistake. Move
away from the Tawaf flow gently so others can continue.
Step 10: Pray two rak‘ahs after Tawaf
After Tawaf, it is Sunnah to pray two rak‘ahs. If possible, pray behind Maqam Ibrahim. But if it
is crowded, do not block the path or disturb others. You may pray anywhere suitable inside
Masjid al-Haram.
“وَاتَّخِذُوا مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى” Transliteration: Wattakhidhoo min maqaami Ibraaheema musalla.
Meaning: “Take the standing place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.”
Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:125
Meaning: “Take the standing place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.” Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:125
Note: In the two rak‘ahs, many scholars mention that the Prophet (SAW) recited Surah
Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas. If you do not know them well, recite what you can correctly.
Step 11: Drink Zamzam water
After the two rak‘ahs, drink Zamzam if
available. Face the Qiblah if convenient, say Bismillah, drink calmly, and make dua. Do not
waste water. Do not push people near the Zamzam area.
Step 12: Continue to Sa‘i if you are performing Umrah
If your Tawaf is for Umrah, the next step is Sa‘i between
Safa and Marwah. Sa‘i has seven walks, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah.
“إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ” Transliteration: Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha‘aa’irillah. Meaning: “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:158
Note: After Sa‘i, men shave or trim their hair. Women cut a small amount from the ends of
their hair. Then Umrah is complete.
Types of Tawaf
Tawaf has different types in Hajj and Umrah. Some are required, some are Sunnah, and some
are done as voluntary Ibadah. The purpose may change, but the method remains the same: seven
rounds around the Kaaba with sincerity and remembrance of Allah.
Tawaf al-Umrah: This is the Tawaf performed as part of Umrah. It is followed by Sa‘i,
then shaving or trimming the hair.
Tawaf al-Qudum: This is the arrival Tawaf for those performing certain types of Hajj.
It
is performed when the pilgrim arrives in Makkah.
Tawaf al-Ifadah: This is an essential Tawaf of Hajj. It is also called Tawaf
az-Ziyarah.
It is performed after the main Hajj rites.
Tawaf al-Wada: This is the farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah. It is required for
many
pilgrims, except women who are menstruating according to the known concession.
Nafl Tawaf: This is voluntary Tawaf. A Muslim may perform it when in Masjid al-Haram,
even outside Hajj or Umrah, if the conditions are fulfilled.
Common mistakes during Tawaf
Many mistakes happen because of emotion, crowd pressure, or lack of preparation. Try to avoid
these:
Tawaf al-Umrah: This is the Tawaf performed as part of Umrah. It is followed by Sa‘i,
then shaving or trimming the hair.
Tawaf al-Qudum: This is the arrival Tawaf for those performing certain types of Hajj.
It is performed when the pilgrim arrives in Makkah.
Tawaf al-Ifadah: This is an essential Tawaf of Hajj. It is also called Tawaf
az-Ziyarah. It is performed after the main Hajj rites.
Tawaf al-Wada: This is the farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah. It is required for
many pilgrims, except women who are menstruating according to the known concession.
Nafl Tawaf: This is voluntary Tawaf. A Muslim may perform it when in Masjid al-Haram,
even outside Hajj or Umrah, if the conditions are fulfilled.
What should you do if you lose count?
If you are unsure whether you completed five or six rounds, follow the safer lower number and
complete the remaining rounds. For example, if you are confused between five and six, count it
as five and continue. Try not to panic. Confusion can happen in a large crowd.
Tawaf tips for Bangladeshi pilgrims
Many pilgrims from Bangladesh feel nervous before their first Tawaf. That is normal. A little
preparation makes the journey easier.
Before you travel, learn the basic steps. Keep a small dua list. Stay with your group. Follow
your guide’s instructions. Carry your hotel card. Decide a meeting point in case someone gets
separated. Elderly pilgrims should avoid peak crowd hours when possible.
Most importantly, do not make the ritual harder than it is. Allah has made Ibadah meaningful, not
chaotic.
Best time to perform Tawaf
The crowd level changes by season, prayer time, hotel distance, and Haram management rules. In
many cases, Tawaf may feel easier late at night or after less crowded prayer times. During
Ramadan and Hajj, the crowd can remain heavy almost all day. Always follow official
Haram instructions and your group leader’s guidance.
Short Tawaf checklist for pilgrims
Before starting Tawaf, it helps to keep the main steps in mind. A small checklist can prevent
confusion in the crowd and help you focus more on dua, dhikr, and the meaning of this sacred
Ibadah.
